The object I have chosen to represent fear in the terms of psychoanalytic theory is an overall happy father.

The location to represent fear could be a empty house

Both my object and my location could work in a screenplay well, as I think an  empty house could provoke fear with just the one man who was a father going about his normal business as if there are other family members in the house. However the other family members have been dead for over 10 years now after the father, a local town businessman slaughtered his family. All of the furniture is covered up with thick plastic sheets, amongst this an estate agent is trying to get the man to sell his house as another family want to move in and have seen that only the one man lives there

Film theorists

Sigmund Freud
Sigmund Freud is the founding theory of psychoanalysis. Freud argued that the human mind is partitioned in three parts. The Ego, Super-Ego and Id. The Ego is the most screwed on, sensible and organised part of the mind which has to make sense of the other two. Freud also talked about "the uncanny", "that which reminds us of something from our childhood , long repressed, which now returns in an unfamiliar form", "something can be familiar, yet foreign at the same time resulting in a feeling of it being uncomfortably strange or uncomfortably familiar"

Jacques Lacan
Jacques is very influenced by Sigmund Freud's work and talks about "mirror phase" which is were children aged from two to three years old Realise that they are not attached to their mother and that they are their own person. Lacan means that we go through life trying to reconnect with the "real" self and sense of fullness that we experienced as children. He also says that we seek the "objet petit a"(the person or thing that will complete us) although it doesn't actually exist.

Genre

In today's session we discussed the genre film theory and different peoples views and opinions on the for or against Genre. First we were asked to write down the iconography of a western movie, we were then  asked to create a poster which had no relevance to any type of genre and let the class try and guess what genre type it would fit in . for our poster we wanted to be as vague as possible by having just the eye. for this 20 minute task I just grabbed an image off of google images and played around with the text and colourisation tools, like curves, RGB and various other tools.

later we were asked to choose from two quotes one being for genre and one against. I decided to go for genre, as i feel that we as a race have to categorise everything, we always form queues we have to order things in a certain way and if we lived in a world without genre not only would it cause a massive headache for everybody but we will find a different way of defining a film i.e the person who directed it and other people that contributed, what type of equipment was used, actors etc. genre is a way for us to look at films in a linear way and depict a target audience for specific genres. 



Auteur Theory - Sam Raimi

Before Sam created one of his most well known films The Evil Dead, he was making  Three Stooges influenced shorts, which some scenes in his films you can see. for instance there are a few scenes in the Evil Dead where there is a bit of slapstick back and forth jokes between the characters. one of Raimi's early films 6 Months To Live the entire film was influenced by the Three Stooges as it featured three characters that would convey a three stooges personality/ style.

Sam Raimi also likes to use creative pov shots like in Evil Dead where the camera is flying through the trees.

In most of Sam Raimi's films there is always a male figure which dominates. For instance in the Evil Dead Ash (Bruce Campbell), Spiderman Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire)

Bad Guys!

we were asked to study events from the 1940s to present day. However we were split into groups and given two decades to look at whilst analysing different films from the decades and looking to see how the real life events are conveyed and what the people in that time period feared.

The two decades my group were given was the 1960s and the 2000s, these were two interesting decades as looking back over them a lot happened for instance in the 1960s there where a lot of assassinations like the famous J.F.K., Malcolm X, Martin Luther King assassinations. The Cold War also ran through the 60s, the Berlin Wall was destroyed, the Anti-War movement (or Flower Power) began, also it was one of the biggest decades for space as Apollo 11 landed on the moon, the first human ventured into outer space Yuri Gagarin. So the majority of people in that decade were mostly scared of war, space and assassins. Lots of events also have taken place in the 2000s I think the most memorable events are the terrorist attacks like the 9/11 attack on the world trade centre and the 7/11 bombings in London, there were also lots of natural disasters like the Asian tsunami

Star Trek is a science fiction TV show which has had many relaunches and I think its time for a new one. Star Trek's focus is on the Starship Enterprise and her crew with their mission to explore new planets and discover new things. I think rather than re-launching the show with a new crew and captain I would re-launch Star Trek with the original captain Kirk and the rest of the original crew ,However I would incorporate a Klingon character like Worf from Star Trek Generations

in todays lesson we discussed more about reboots and relaunches, specifically more about concerns in different periods of time which people had. 

one of the examples was the original 1984 Gremlins which is a great film we were then asked to plan what we would do if we where to remake the film, so we had to take into account the worries that the world had at that moment and how these would relate in the film,  what we would change about the protagonist (if anything), a basic synopsis of the plot and if any changes to the antagonist(s). our idea was to effectively keep the name, personality but to recast the main guy for Michael Cera. our plot was to keep the location the same so a small town, the Gremlins we decided to make them more menacing and slightly bigger to create more horror and gather a lager audience because there are a lot of young people these days which like to watch horror films and be scared for an adrenaline rush

For my video podcast i will be discussing the reboot and remake of Godzilla by Ishiro Honda. during this podcast i will be analysing the similarities and differences between other  reboots, furthermore i will be studying whether the same audiences of previous reboots follow the modern take on the remake of Godzilla.

do with the relaunch of Godzilla in 1998.

financial or artistic?. i think that this being the first of the franchise it has got to be both as it was a bit of an experiment to see whether it would fall or rise.

Marketing. showing advertisements in newspapers on billboards, there were posters that were plotted around also. marketing costs ended up at around 37,000,000 JPY roughly 600,000 US dollars.

production and distribution. the film didn't actually come out on any format until 1998 in which it released on dvd.

Audiences. i think that the audiences for the original Godzilla movie in 1954 did not follow due to the sequel (Godzilla: King of The Monsters)produced by the american film industry which was rushed, as it was the original film re-edited with some added footage of an american actor called Raymond Burr.

financial or artistic?. i think that this remake of Godzilla was made for financial gain as they spent a huge amount of time "bigging" the film up by plotting crushed cars around london as part of a gureilla advertising campaign

In todays lesson we where randomly put in  to focus groups. A focus group generally is a group of people who are picked at random to discuss and analyse the chosen subject.

in our groups we were asked to discuss everyones ideas for the single camera drama assignment.

personally i found the focus group exercise helpful as everyone shared their ideas and thoughts on their film ideas, we then constructively criticised each idea and then incorporated the ideas into our own.

I feel I gained more ideas for scenes and also peoples opinions on my idea which is important  to have over just going on my own thoughts which will obviously be biased.

My groups idea:

our story is based on our protagonist being trapped in a room tied to a chair being interrogated. having a potato sack over his head, whilst the whole story evolves around the protagonists flashbacks. discovering that the actual culprit is the antagonists guard.

Film Advertising ESSAY

Test Screening is a brilliant way to get the publics opinion on a film a few months before the release of the film, many production companies before the internet came out used test screenings to get the publics opinion and also used them so the public would spread the word that it was a good film.

Production companies like the Warner Bros, Universal, 20th Century Fox and Metro Goldwyn Mayer all use test screenings to promote their film through word of mouth whether it was good or not. Usually in a test screening the organisers will give out little questionnaires, the questionnaires determine whether the film should be released publicly or not. However some companies like Warner Bros don't really care a lot if their film is liked or not for instance, the film has to score a 70% feedback otherwise they will cancel the film or change the film in little ways, just like George Lucas's first Star Wars film after many test screenings was changed, his script was scrapped several times and the title three times, the first title was called the adventures of Luke Star killer, it was then renamed the adventures of Luke Skywalker and then later the name as we know it now Star Wars. Originally the famous scene of the Greedo and Han Solo shootout in the cantina bar had Han shoot first which made Han look like a cold killer, they then edited the scene so that Greedo has his weapon on Han but still made Han look like a murderer so they then re shot the scene with Greedo shooting first. When the special anniversary edition of star wars was released in 1997 of the trilogy the scene was edited so that when Greedo shoots Hans head moves to doge the laser which is clearly done in some sort of visual effects software like adobe aftereffects. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xezn-0xottw

 Christopher Nolan's last Batman film The Dark Knight Rises was recut after they received the feedback from the fans who attended the test screening saying that the main villains (Bane) voice was to distorted and couldn't make out the majority of his dialogue, therefore the production team took the feedback into consideration and had to have Tom Hardy go in and dub his voice over the top to make his voice sound cleaner and more understandable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZW5qyc2g6U

Films are not always as we expect them to be, in fact there are many films bought out every year which are misinterpreted by the audience, we can see this in the poster for the film Mans Best Friend as clearly indicated on the poster the dog is a cyborg? A genetically mutated dog is accidentally released from the lab of Dr. Jarret and ends up at the home of news reporter/animal rights advocate Lori Tanner. The dog, Max, indulged with intelligence and other special abilities, is at first lovable, but also proves to be a killer. Misrepresentation can have devastating effects on films, a well-known director like Sam Raimi could promote his film by distributing posters with cute little bunnies with reviews of five stars saying it was “sensational”, “breath taking” when really it’s a slasher horror film about killer rabbits running chaos in New York, this sort of representation could have a negative effect on Sam Raimi's reputation where he's known for a gritty looking horror film and not a children’s film maker. This type of representation can have the same effect on actors as actors that have worked for their reputation in a certain style or genre will lose their reputation over them being misrepresented through promoting the film. When we see films that are not like the films that we’ve seen advertised its not because their stupid its generally because they are trying to grab a wider audience

More and more contemporary films are beginning to promote their films through interactive media such as websites, mobile apps, allowing fans to download wallpapers and trailers for free and Internet games. Some companies like the Warner Bros have taken a different and more creative approach to promote their films, for instance in the film The Dark knight, Warner Bros decided to really grab the fans attention and spread the word by getting the fans to submit their contact details which would reveal a pixel of an image which gradually revealed the face of the joker, this was the first publicly introduced image of the joker, (Christopher Nolan even told the actors the film ending in person to reduce the chance of plot leaks). http://thedarkknight.warnerbros.com/dvdsite/

Fan culture plays a big part in Films, as there are many adapted graphic novels and books, which sometimes fall flat on their face, take the Daredevil as an example; fans eagerly awaited the release of the film, which then fell face first as fans attacked the film with hate as most things in the film were inaccurate, Daredevil beat Kingpin in their first fight which is impossible for a blind guy to beat a huge incredibly strong hulk of a man in their first fight, Daredevil met Elektra which is inaccurate as Daredevil doesn’t meet Elektra until at least four volumes into the comic series. It used to be that nerds would shy away in their rooms reading comics to their hearts content but now there are huge expos, meet ups, panels and conventions. One of the biggest conventions in the world is ComiCon with over 130,000 nerds attend at a general price of £10 an adult and £6 for a child. ComiCon started on 21st    
March 1970 at the U.S Grand Hotel with an attendance of only 145 nerds this event was a fund raiser to host another gathering in august, ComiCon is so widely known now that most film directors and other companies with a fan base are itching to show their fans the new and exciting things that they are bringing out, even actors who play the fans favourite heroes attend to promote their films and products further and some come as their character just like Tom Hiddleston did at this years ComiCon, acts like this make films very popular and the avengers was a massively popular film. You can measure the popularity of a film just by looking at reviews of the film on websites like imdb, rotten tomatoes even your local cinema will have forums and film reviews, films popularity can also be measured by the amount of views channels can get on YouTube, vimeo, twitch TV and more specific to a certain film.

Ideas for Film Studies Essay

my first film I'm thinking of researching in depth is the Batman vs Superman film (a.k.a Man of Steel 2) . this is because many "nerds" are anticipating the release of the film and more information. I feel that the way they are going to release this film will be much like the release of the Dark Knight, which had a very successful advertising technique, the way they announced the film was amazing as they really pinched the audience by giving a quote from the comic "I want you to remember, Clark, in all the years to come, in all your most private moments, I want you to remember my hand at your throat,”.
